Process re-engineering
All businesses operate by processing certain inputs and transforming them into outputs. The objectives of any process are to:
- Produce the highest quality output
- At the lowest possible cost
- As fast as possible
- While improving service levels
Rarely do all core processes within an organisation achieve all of these objectives. There may be regular processing errors, significant manual intervention/double-handling, long lead times that delay customers or other internal core processes.
Many businesses invest resources into resolving business process issues in-house, however in many cases, process maps are complicated, apply varying levels of detail and prompts more questions provides answers. According to Michael Hammer, author of "Re-engineering the Corporation", 60 percent of re-engineering projects deliver little or no benefit as a result of assigning re-engineering activities to the wrong people and lack of management sponsorship.
